Together we can reach others with the love of Christ

Christian Dalits
Evangelism has always been more
fruitful among the Dalits than among the higher castes, and
increasingly the egalitarian nature of Christianity has attracted
them as one way at least to a decent existence. It is mainly due to
Christian efforts, in social work and literacy classes as well as in
evangelism, that the Dalits have become more aware of their rights.
This involvement has not been welcomed, however, by the recent Hindu
government of Prime Minister Vajpayee. The leading BJP party has
strong connections with the RSS, a fundamentalist Hindu group that
propagates India as a Hindu country and all other religions as
unworthy imports. This group has increasingly labelled Christianity
a Western religion (ignoring its origin in West-Asia and its
existence in India from the very first century BC), and Christians
as bringers of Western "neo-imperialism". Active persecution started
in January 1999, with the burning alive of Australian missionary
Graham Staines and his two young sons. Many atrocities against
Christians have taken place since then, and every opportunity has
been used to make Christian work virtually impossible. But the
reactions of the Christians have somewhat puzzled most Indians.
Graham Staines' widow publicly forgave his murderers. When pastors
were beaten, nuns raped and churches burned, Christians only staged
peaceful processions and did not retaliate even once. It may well
have been this forgiving attitude which has impressed Indians to
look again and open their heart to the peace and forgiveness only
Christ can offer.
The crop is ready for harvest. Let us
be urged by the love of Christ to reach out today and take the
opportunity God has given us.
